On 5 and 6 February 2010, the European freeski elite gathered in the Vans Penken Park and showed freestyle action on highest level! Roy Kittler won the first Mayrhofen Freeski Open 2010, closely followed by Andri Ambühl (CH) and Markus Eder (GER). Despite the difficult weather conditions all riders were super motivated and had a lot of fun. The Mayrhofen Freeski Open powered by Nordica Freeskiers was a successful event and everybody had a great time!
A great time! That was the intention of organizers Mayrhofner Bergbahnen and Nordica Freeskiers. In collaboration with their partners Mercedes-Benz GLK and Almdudler they wanted to create a nice contest for the freeski scene. Martin Misof, international Nordica freeskier, made an impressive debut as contest manager and his enthusiasm inspired the riders. In heavy snowfall and fog on Saturday, he worked hard with the rest of the team to prepare the setup and sprayed tons of fluorescent color on the jumps to mark the take-offs.
„It’s easy to organize a contest in good weather and keep everybody entertained“, says Martin Misof. “It’s a different story when the conditions are difficult. Then it’s important to give your best. That’s what we did. As well as all the riders who showed freeskiing at its best with hard tricks and an enthusiasm that makes me proud to be a freeskier.
” Jonas Hunziker, Nordica Freeskiers Europe teamrider, says about the Rookies Contest on the first day: “The Rookie Contest took place on Friday in relatively nice weather. The level was very high and the upcoming stars showed crazy runs with spins in both directions, switch tricks and various flips and corks."
Six riders qualified for the finale where they had to show once again what they’ve got. Among them were Till JCD Matti and Sandro Cola from Switzerland. Till shredded the boxes like there was no tomorrow and showed Switch Left Cork Seven to Switch Right Five on the jumps. With this run he convinced the judges and won the Rookie Contest. Lukas Mangold sticked his stylish tricks very clean and went for a close second. Sandro Cola got third.
The ladies also started on Friday and showed some sick runs. Lena Stoffl won the Ladies Contest with a Switch Five to Misty Seven.
On Saturday it was time for the men. The weather was not perfect: lots of clouds, some snowfall and a little fog. Fortunately not too much so the judges could watch the whole slopestyle run. Despite the conditions the riders were very motivated and after some re-shaping of the jumps the qualifying could be started.
10 riders qualified for the finals – which went all haywire. The 10 finalists showed spectacular runs and in the end it was Roy Kittler from Germany who took the win with his spins in both directions and his beautiful Switch Double Cork Ten. Second got Andri Ambühl from Switzerland with a very solid and stylish run: Switch Right Nine to Left Cork Nine to Switch Left Ten Mute Poke! The talented Italian Markus Eder went for it from dust till dawn and it seemed he didn’t really care about the bad weather. He showed sick tricks such as Switch Back to Back Ten and landed on the third place.
“It was a great event and I enjoyed the time on the mountain!” concludes Jonas Hunzikers the first Mayrhofen Freeski Open 2010.
In the evening it was time for the riders’ party in the Scotland Yard Pub in Mayrhofen. Wax Wreckaz, sponsored by gloryfy googles, kept the party pumping till the next morning.
The first cooperation of the Mayrhofner Bergbahnen and Nordica Freeskiers was a complete success. They would like to thank all riders and partners who helped making this unique freeski event possible! |
